President’s Message

by FSA Webmaster

April, 2023

Brence Sell, MD
Tallahassee Memorial Health Care
2023 FSA President

It’s April and the Legislature is in session!

What do Legislators want from us? What does the Governor want? What do the people of Florida want? What do we want?
At the most basic level, the people of Florida want the “triple aim” from medicine:

  1. High quality care. The U.S. health care system is a global leader in scientific advancement, but lags behind other developed countries in overall healthcare outcomes.
  2. Improved access to care. Patients want easy, convenient access to care. They would like medical care to function like Chick-fil-A.
  3. Low costs. The public doesn’t seem to care how much care costs if other people are paying (insurance companies, the government, etc.). They want their own out-of-pocket expenses to remain low. Of note, Americans spend more on vitamins, herbal medications, and “alternative” treatments than they spend out-of-pocket for traditional medical care.
The Legislators and the Governor want favorable press, votes, and campaign contributions.
Physician Anesthesiologists want to protect our patients and receive payments commensurate with our skill and contribution to patient care. Physician-led care in anesthesia results in lower costs and superior outcomes. Physician Anesthesiologists also desire recognition of our training and expertise. Becoming a Physician Anesthesiologist is a long, arduous journey. The title “Anesthesiologist” should not be usurped by providers who have not completed Medical School and an accredited Residency in Anesthesiology. The FSA is diligently pursuing Legislation to protect our title.
The FSA is working on behalf of all Anesthesiologists in Florida to protect our patients and our practices! The Officers and Board members of the FSA wish to thank all our members for their dedication, generosity, and perseverance in pursuing our goals!

    Sincerely,
    Brence A. Sell, MD, FASA
    President
    Florida Society of Anesthesiologists
