If you have seen recent news stories about malignant hyperthermia:
The recent death of a Boca Raton teenager after breast correction surgery raises concerns about a disorder called malignant hyperthermia (MH). MH is an inherited disorder in which certain commonly used gas anesthetics lead to the development of high body temperature and muscle rigidity that can be harmful unless recognized and treated.
Although MH is rare, the Florida Society of Anesthesiologists urges patients to learn their family histories, such as whether any relative has had unusual reactions, or even died, during or following surgery. This is information your surgeons and anesthesia provider needs to know about before surgery.
