Florida's Anesthesiologists Working for you ... PDF Print E-mail
Welcome to the Florida Society of Anesthesiologists!

The Florida Society of Anesthesiologists is working to uphold the highest standards of anesthesia care and patient advocacy, by promoting research, education, and innovation in anesthesia care.

ImageThe Florida Society of Anesthesiologists is an educational, research and scientific association of physicians organized to raise and maintain the standards of the medical practice of anesthesiology and improve the care of their patients.

Since its founding in 1948, the Society's achievements have made it an important voice in Florida Medicine and the foremost advocate for all patients who require anesthesia or relief from pain.

As physicians, anesthesiologists are responsible for administering anesthesia to relieve pain and for managing vital life functions during surgery, including breathing, heart rhythm and blood pressure. After surgery, they maintain the patient in a comfortable state during their stay in the recovery area, and some anesthesiologists are involved in the practice of critical care medicine in the intensive care unit.

Malignant Hyperthermia Update PDF Print E-mail
If you have seen recent news stories about malignant hyperthermia:

The recent death of a Boca Raton teenager after breast correction surgery raises concerns about a disorder called malignant hyperthermia (MH).  MH is an inherited disorder in which certain commonly used gas anesthetics lead to the development of high body temperature and muscle rigidity that can be harmful unless recognized and treated.

Although MH is rare, the Florida Society of Anesthesiologists urges patients to learn their family histories, such as whether any relative has had unusual reactions, or even died, during or following surgery. This is information your surgeons and anesthesia provider needs to know about before surgery.

For more information about MH, visit the Malignant Hyperthermia Association of the United States at www.mhaus.org.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) today issued a final physician payment rule designed to improve accuracy of Medicare payments and give physicians and health care professionals additional financial incentives to provide higher quality and value in the delivery of care.

“The 2008 rule also adopts recommendations of the American Medical Association’s Relative Value Update Committee to increase the payments for the work involved in providing anesthesia services by 32 percent.  In addition, the value of the work component of certain physician visits to patients’ homes will increase.”
